Tosh’s Top 5 Firsts

Welcome to my travel blog of Belize! For my first post I’ll be sharing some of my very first adventures. I hope you enjoy it and stay tuned for more…

# 1 FLYING IN A CESSNA PLANE– We landed in Belize City and we hopped on a tiny plane. It took us about 40 minutes to get to Placencia after stopping twice. It was a lot different than most planes. It was super small and you could feel every movement. The landing in such a small plane was a little freaky but thrilling.

#2 FISHING– On my third day here my mom had to work so I hung out with 2 kids from the school and they taught me how to catch fish with a handline. We went to the pier and I caught 5 or 6 little fish. We released them because they were too small but it was still fun. Later that day, I went fishing outside my house on the lagoon. When I finally caught one I couldn’t get it off the hook and it flopped back into the water, still attached to my hook. There was a pelican sitting right there and it snatched the fish hook and all. We had to cut the line, and I hope the pelican is ok. After a lesson, some more practice, and better equipment, I’ve improved at casting my line.

#3 SNORKELING
– After about a week, we randomly ran into a friend of my mom’s. He was going on a snorkeling tour the next day, to a little island 16 miles away. He invited us to come with him and his family and we got to snorkel in 2 different spots. The first was right off of a private island called Pompion Caye. It was cool to see all the coral and fish. Getting in and out of the water was tricky with fins on but once we got in it was easy. We also had a delicious lobster lunch!

At the second snorkeling spot we just hopped off the boat. We saw turtles, nurse sharks, eagle rays, and south rays. I liked the second spot more because the sharks and the turtles were cooler.

We spent a second day snorkeling and kayaking off Placencia Caye. The water wasn’t as clear because it had just rained and the river runoff comes into the sea, but we still some some cool fish and corals.

#4 TRYING COCONUT MEAT AND WATER– When I first tried coconut meat, I was expecting a sweet crunchy fruit but to me it just tasted like an almond. I was not expecting that at all but it was pretty good. When I tried coconut water I had no idea what it was going to taste like. It was too sweet for me and I wasn’t a huge fan off it.

#5 FIRST TIME OUT OF THE COUNTRY– Belize is very different form the U.S. People here call the ocean the sea. I think they call it that because it is on the Caribbean sea. The water is also really warm and salty. It gets dark here in Belize around 6:30 which is very weird for me. There are also lots of bugs like mosquitoes and sand flies that have been biting and itching a lot. The weather has been super hot and it feels very heavy.

I’m looking forward to school starting next week and making even more friends.
